چکیده

determined in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees and stands from 7 to about 60 years of age. At the stand scale, leaf area index and net primary productivity (NPP, aboveplus belowground) increased and reached a plateau at about 25--30 and 15--20 years, respectively; both parameters declined in mature stands. Stand hydraulic conductance followed a similar trend to NPP, with a maximum at about 15--20 years and a pronounced reduction in old stands. At the tree scale, annual biomass growth per unit of leaf area (growth efficiency) declined with tree age, whereas aboveground sapwood volume per unit leaf area, which is linearly related to maintenance respiration costs, steadily increased. Radiation interception per unit leaf area increased significantly with reduced leaf area index of mature stands, despite increased foliage clumping in the canopies of mature trees. Needle nutrient concentration did not change in the chronosequence. Tree hydraulic conductance per unit leaf area was strongly and positively correlated with growth efficiency. We discuss our findings in the context of growth reductions in mature and old trees, and suggest that increased hydraulic resistance and maintenance respiration costs may be the main causes of reduced carbon gain in mature and old trees.

Fertilization has little effect on light-interception efficiency of Picea abies shoots.

We investigated effects of nutrient availability on shoot structure and light-interception efficiency based on data from control (C) and irrigated + fertilized (IL) trees of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). The sampling of 1-year-old shoots was designed to cover the variation in canopy exposure within the live crown zone, where current-year shoots were still found. Canopy openness was u...

Growth and water relations of three geographically separate origins of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) under saline conditions.

Water relations and growth of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) were investigated in 2-year-old seedlings of French ('Landes'), Iberian ('Iberian') and Moroccan ('Tamjoute') origin raised for 67 days in a flowing solution culture system containing 0, 50, 150 or 250 mM NaCl. Height growth, and stem, needle and root dry matter were reduced by salinity with minor differences among geographic ori...

Combined effects of arbuscular mycorrhizas and light on water uptake of the neotropical understory shrubs, Piper and Psychotria

• Root hydraulic conductance (K r ) was measured for five understory shrub species of the neotropical moist forest to determine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) for both carbon-rich and carbon-limited host plants. • K r was measured using a high pressure flow meter (HPFM) for potted plants grown in a factorial combination of AM fungi (presence/absence) and light (3.5 and 30% of full s...

Plant size, not age, regulates growth and gas exchange in grafted Scots pine trees.

We studied the effect of scion donor-tree age on the physiology and growth of 6- to 7-year-old grafted Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees (4 and 5 years after grafting). Physiological measurements included photosynthethetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration, whole plant hydraulic conductance, needle nitrogen concentration and carbon isotope composition. Growth measurements included ...

Nitrogen regulation of transpiration controls mass-flow acquisition of nutrients

Transpiration may enhance mass-flow of nutrients to roots, especially in low-nutrient soils or where the root system is not extensively developed. Previous work suggested that nitrogen (N) may regulate mass-flow of nutrients. Experiments were conducted to determine whether N regulates water fluxes, and whether this regulation has a functional role in controlling the mass-flow of nutrients to ro...
